In Respect Of Women In The Prime Of Life

Are you a woman “of a certain age”? You know what I mean. Kids are grown and flown. If you’re married, maybe you and the spouse have fallen into the hypnotic rhythm of life. Or you may have been a ‘stay at home’ and now the nest is empty. You may be coming to the end of a career and are looking forward to what’s next.

But what is next? If you’re lucky enough to have a pension or two from a long career, or have been fiscally responsible and saving for retirement, hopefully you’ll feel financially comfortable for the rest of your life.

If that’s your story, YAY you! You don’t have to worry about the money. What a relief! You can do what you want when you want. Excellent!

What’s next for you?

But, here’s something else to consider…they* say “50 is the new 30” when it comes to aging. I have to agree with that. So if this is true, what will you do with all those remaining many years?

What will your second act be? How might you reinvent yourself? I spent thirty years working, first in a Big Eight public accounting tax department, and the the rest of the time in a corporate tax department and during that time I earned my MBA and became a CPA. I made it to middle management about 20 years ago and made a decent living for over thirty years. But it wasn’t my passion…not even close.

What I did and still do

When I experienced a major health event, it changed my life and I found my passion. That happened about ten years ago and I began what was at the time, my “side hustle”. I became a health and wellness practitioner after going to school for health and nutrition coaching. Now I get to do what I love to do, full time. I get to help people feel as well and healthy as I do. Because I feel better now than I did twenty years ago. I’m also healthier now than I was twenty years ago.

My second act is keeping me healthy and vibrant as I age. If I’m going to help other people live their best lives, I better be an example of how to do just that, by walking my talk and doing what I do with integrity.

I get to do something that makes it exciting for me to get up in the morning…empowering people to change their lives and live longer, healthier and more vibrantly than they even imagined was possible. I am so blessed to be able to take what I learned through my own experience, and the training I received to empower people to live their best lives.

Make this the best part of your life

If you are as blessed as I am to make it this far in life, you might consider a few advantages that we have amassed. Here are  some of the advantages we can enjoy according to Huffpost.

  • Wisdom – wisdom is the ability to apply the knowledge we acquire through our lives to accomplish what needs to be done
  • Negotiating – as we progress through parenthood, being a spouse, being an employee, or being class mom, we have learned to get what we need and want through the art of compromise
  • Resilience –  chances are if you’ve made it this far, stuff has happened to you and you’ve come out the other side
  • Effectiveness – we get stuff done because we’ve had to do so
  • Sense of humor – we learn through life’s ups and downs not to take ourselves too seriously which is something that comes from going through life’s experiences

Whatever you think you want to do as your second act, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. This is your story to write and tell. Make this part the best yet.

*I don’t know who ‘they’ is.

My Story

Since June 2019, I decided to hold myself accountable for walking my talk. Several years ago, I was able to take off 135 pounds and essentially save my own life. I regained some of that weight in the last couple of years and I’m working my way back down. I’ve lost over 40 pounds since I began in June and have exercised nearly every day since August.

If you choose to join me on this journey, I hope I am able to impart some nutritional and lifestyle wisdom. Even though I may have gone off the rails temporarily I can still share some of my first hand experience as well as my acquired knowledge and training to help you make the right changes to live your best life.

I am a woman of a certain age. I never had a husband or children, and that was not by choice. My career died on the vine. But I have reinvented myself a few times, and I am open to more change. Change is good. It is about life because life is not static. Someday, I will find my joy.

Alice…as long as you have breath in your body, there is still opportunity to reinvent yourself. I hope you find your joy.
