In Honor

And now for something completely different.

Today we acknowledge two national treasures...The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the inimitable Betty White. We celebrate both of their birthdays today, posthumously. So I thought I would show a few quotes from each to illustrate the impact they have had on us.

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Another way that you love your enemy is this: When the opportunity presents itself for you to defeat your enemy, that is the time which you must not do it. There will come a time, in many instances, when the person who hates you most, the person who has misused you most, the person who has gossiped about you most, the person who has spread false rumors about you most, there will come a time when you will have an opportunity to defeat that person. It might be in terms of a recommendation for a job; it might be in terms of helping that person to make some move in life. That’s the time you must do it. That is the meaning of love." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

What the FBI said

This statement was in a memo circulated throughout the FBI after King's "I Have a Dream" speech, .

In the light of King’s powerful demagogic speech yesterday he stands heads and shoulders over all other Negro leaders put together when it comes to influencing great masses of Negros. We must mark him now, if we have not done so before, as the most dangerous Negro of the future in this nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro, and national security.

So essentially, the FBI declared this man, who spoke of nothing but love and peaceful resistance, a national security risk. Seriously???

On the other hand, we have another national treasure we lost just short of her 100th birthday. We acknowledge and celebrate her today.

Betty White

“However, if one is lucky enough to be blessed with good health, growing older shouldn’t be something to complain about. It’s not a surprise, we knew it was coming—make the most of it. So you may not be as fast on your feet, and the image in your mirror may be a little disappointing, but if you are still functioning and not in pain, gratitude should be the name of the game.” – Betty White

“You can lie to anyone in the world and even get away with it, perhaps, but when you are alone and look into your own eyes in the mirror, you can’t sidestep the truth. Always be sure you can meet those eyes directly. Otherwise, it’s big trouble, my girl.” – Betty White

What the world said

I recently saw a quote on social media that pretty much said, "imagine living almost 100 years and the world not thinking that was long enough". What a testament to a deep love.

Both of these individuals were here to make life a little better for people, each in their own way. They  lived in integrity and were true to what they believed and wanted to leave the planet a little better than they found it. I think they did.

Karen, thanks for a great post. That FBI response to MLK is amazing! But if you think of the times, and the mission/s of the FBI, it's not surprising. How dare that man stir up the masses...to love each other and walk in peace? And some coward had to shoot him while he was minding his own business, standing on a hotel balcony. Sigh. I am actually just learning about Betty White. What magnificent quotes you have brought us from her.

They were both amazing humans in their own way. The world is better having had them in it.

Karen, Thank you for a great post. They both remind us how to love at a time when we badly need to be reminded.

We sure do need the reminder.

Two greats that share a wonderful day. THe impact that both of these 2 had/have is amazing. Imagine if everyone followed the advice of both of them?!? What a world we would live in.

We all can take a page from their books. Each in their own way moved us a little bit forward I think.

MLK was a prophet and in my eyes, a saint. He is my sister’s Guru, and I can see why.

Betty White’s love for animals stands out, for me. I recently read a quote by her about why she worked as long as she did: to support the animals she loved.

I would agree with you about MLK. And isn't it cool that Betty White was working to support the animals so late into her life?
