Heart Healthy Eating – The Abridged Version

The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison – Ann Wigmore

Did you know that what you eat can have a direct impact on the state of your health? And your cardiac health can be directly affected, both positively and negatively, by what you put in your body.

Over the years, we have been bombarded by all sorts of conflicting information. For years, we were told that fat was the villain in our diet. So what did we do? We bought everything low fat or no fat. And do you know what happened? We got larger and more unhealthy the more supposedly “healthy” food we consumed.

Then “they” told us that sugar is making us obese which…spoiler alert…it is. So what did we do? We started using artificial sweeteners which wreak havoc in our gut, cause cravings, contribute to diabetes and have been linked to many cancers.

So…What Should We Do?

I’ll give you the Cliff Notes version because I don’t want to fire hose you with tons of information. Here is the short list of what you should and should not consume to protect your heart

Should

  • plenty of fresh vegetables and some fruit of all colors
  • whole grains
  • non-animal sources of protein like tofu, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, nut butters
  • some fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids
  • little white meat like free range organic and humanely treated chicken or turkey
  • healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, nut butters

Should not

  • red meats
  • factory farmed meats
  • farmed fish
  • processed foods
  • refined white grains
  • refined carbohydrates
  • packaged food with chemicals, bad fats, processed sugar
  • soft drinks, regular and diet
  • highly refined oils
  • margarine

These lists are far from comprehensive. When I work with my clients, we get very clear on what foods are beneficial and which do not serve you.

If you stick with a mostly plant-based eating plan that is mostly plants in their natural form, and not the highly processed meat lookalikes, not isolated plant protein, you will do yourself a huge favor. You’ll support your cardiac health, and your overall health.

You can make some changes to you diet and see wondrous results. Your body wants to be healthy but it needs your support. I can help with that.
