Would You Change Anything?

“There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly” – R. Buckminster Fuller

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone gave us the roadmap to a perfect life? What would you have done differently? How would your life look if you knew then what you know now? I have been thinking about that a bit lately and this is what I came up with.

I don’t have regrets because the life I’ve lived got me where I am today so I can’t say I’ve wasted my time. My previous career was very rewarding. I have a rich, full life with people I love and who love me. I have twice come back from life-threatening experiences, stronger and better off. But there are things I might have done differently.

If I’d only known, I would have…

  • been more fearless
  • had more adventures
  • found my voice sooner
  • had more patience
  • said ‘I love you’ more
  • been more involved with what is important to those important to me
  • treated my body better
  • learned more about nutrition much earlier

If I’d only known…I would have started my coaching practice as a side hustle much earlier

I’m one of the lucky ones. I finally know what I want to be when I grow up. Not everyone gets the privilege or has the insight but I figured it out for me. It would have been nice to know many years before I got here but then I might not have realized I had arrived.

Life happens in divine timing I suppose. We don’t necessarily know what that timing is however, until we have the benefit of hindsight.

I have no complaints and I believe I have lots of time and opportunity to write the ending. But we never really know that, do we? You know…divine timing and all.

No regrets is a good goal.
I think choices lead to wisdom, so it’s almost impossible to not have some regrets. We learn from our choices.

But making wise decisions will certainly lead to less regrets.

    Thanks for this!

Good judgment is always something to strive for and hopefully something we exercise more often than not.

“How would your life look if you knew then what you know now? I have been thinking about that a bit lately …” So have I and I do not know. I was thinking about this very issue the other day – did not come up with any concrete answers so I let my mind shuffle the thought off into the background and went on with whatever task I had been doing when the thought popped into my head. Thanks to your post I guess I will have to revisit it.

It’s always good to reflect a bit but also to take stock of what has gone well and to celebrate those many wins. We learn from the experiences we have…or we are doomed to repeat them.

I have never thought “what if”, I’ve always been happy with my life. I have gone through a few devastating medical events with my older daughter and again with one of my granddaughters with different types of tumors needing surgery and if there is anything I could have known it would have been how to prepare them for what was to come. Thankfully both had successful surgeries and are fine.

Thank goodness they’re well Martha. There can be no greater pain than to see your child or grandchild suffer.
