Whose Responsibility Is It?

Some of my favorite quotes came from Maya Angelou. She was wise and much of what she said really speaks to me.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou

When I was trying to dream up some inspiration for today’s post, I thought about personal responsibility. We often go through life placing blame for our personal circumstances elsewhere. By doing that we abdicate our personal power too. We are the result of the decisions we make day after day whether we are aware of it or not.

We may not be able to change or even influence what happens around us but we can change the way we look at the situation.

Take the current global situation around a potentially devastating disease. We are being asked, and in many cases told,  to be inoculated to prevent and/or limit further infection.

The Decision Is Yours

Regardless of your position on this issue, you have a decision to make. You can either take the inoculation or not. If you take it, there could be side effects that we may or may not be aware of currently. And you may or may not be impacted by those side effects. You may or may not keep yourself from becoming ill or very ill. You may or may not stem the spread of the illness. If you have co-morbidities like obesity, or diabetes, or an autoimmune condition that impact your ability to fight or avoid any type of serious illness, it may or may not help you. Because of these pre-existing conditions, you may or may not suffer side effects more seriously. If you take the shot, you made the decision to do so, short of someone tying you down and putting a needle in your arm.

If you choose not to take the inoculation, there could be ramifications from that as well, or not. You could contract a serious case of the illness that you might not have had you taken the shot. But maybe not. You could be denied access to employment, entertainment, certain healthcare like organ transplant or any number of freedoms we currently enjoy…or maybe not. You might have to contend with being socially ostracized or not. If you choose not to take the shot, you made the decision to do so.

In either of these cases, you are in control of the action you decide to take or not take. You are fully responsible for your actions and the resulting impact of the decisions to take those actions..

Another Scenario

How about food choices? We have loads of options for food, some of which are beneficial and some are not. The marketing around some of those options is misleading and doesn’t always provide all the relevant information to make a sound, well thought out decision. But we must remember that the choice is always ours. We may have to do some research to find out what we’re really eating, what the impact is and ultimately what it does to our body long-term.

 

 Don’t Give Up Your Power

We can make our choices based on someone else’s decision, opinion, guidance, demands, etc. Another way we can make our choices is by doing some critical thinking. We have access to so much information that admittedly, it can be overwhelming.

We can form our identity based on what other people tell us we are or should be, or we can be who we want to be and decide for ourselves.We may not be able to change things outside of ourselves but we can change the way we react to what is going on. We can make the decision to not let the influence in that we don’t want to let in.

We have the ultimate free will to do, feel, think, behave the way we want. There may be consequences to any of those decisions, but they’re ours. We are the person we choose to be with every decision we make. It’s no one else’s responsibility nor is it anyone else’s fault. We all have baggage we’ve accumulated throughout life from childhood, past trauma, events that we’ve witnessed or experienced. Even with all of this, we still have the choice to be, do, think or feel the way we choose. Hold onto your power and don’t give it away by putting the responsibility on anyone else.

      Me too. It seems as if gone are the days of accountability and responsibility. We see it everywhere. It is always someone else’s fault.

        It’s easier to point the finger I guess than to reflect on your own behavior.

    I like this. A great reminder that we can ONLY control ourselves. We may have some input, but we can really only control our actions or reactions. We have to be responsible for ourselves and do what’s best for us. Thanks for sharing.
