If you know me or my work, you probably know that I’m a proud WomenHeart Champion Community Educator. I received my training at the Mayo Clinic in their 2018 Science and Leadership Symposium to go into the community and educate everyone about women and heart health.
What is WomenHeart?
WomenHeart is the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease and the leading voice of the 48 million American women living with or at risk of heart disease. It’s the first and only national patient-centered organization dedicated to serving women with heart disease.
February is Heart Month
February is American Heart Month. It’s a powerful reminder that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. It’s also an opportunity to raise public awareness about risk factors and what women can do to improve heart health.
With nearly 48 million women in the United States living with or at risk of heart disease, it is critical for women to educate themselves about this killer. Heart disease outpaces all types of cancer combined as the #1 killer of women.
As a WomenHeart Champion, I am using my voice to empower other women to advocate for themselves and to take control of their heart health. Much of the information I share is shocking to many of the people who hear it.
What’s going on
WomenHeart is recognizing Heart Month online, at in-person events around the country (when life is more “normal”) and by talking to legislators about the need to address heart disease in women.
Social media campaigns include #29DaysofHeart. The campaigns focus on raising awareness about the risk and prevalence of heart disease in African-American women as we incorporate both Black History Month and Heart Month.
WomenHeart is uniquely positioned to amplify the voices of women with heart disease. They empower us to tell our stories and advocate for policies that promote health equity for women. WomenHeart also provides opportunities for women to support each other as we learn to thrive with heart disease.
What you can do
