Forgiveness…Do It For You

Have you ever heard that holding a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die? I may have paraphrased but I captured the sentiment.

What is forgiveness?

Psychologists define forgiveness as the conscious deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or a group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness.

What is forgiveness NOT?

Just because you forgive someone of something they have perpetrated against you does not mean you let them off the hook. Nor does it mean you condone what they did. It in no way obligates you to continue in a relationship with that person, nor does it release them of accountability for the act. It may aid in repairing a relationship if you want that to happen but it doesn’t have to be that way.

What is the benefit of forgiveness?

Forgiveness is for the person doing the forgiving, not for the person being forgiven. It frees the forgiver from the detrimental physical and emotional affects of harboring anger toward the perpetrator. It helps the forgiver to let go of the deep negative feelings attached to the offense and the offender, allowing them to regain peace of mind. Forgiving doesn’t mean that the pain is completely gone necessarily but hopefully it won’t be as difficult to bear.

Forgiveness helps to preserve our happiness, protects our mental health and also our physical health. When you hold a grudge your blood pressure suffers and heart rate is increased. These are damaging to your body when they go on for an extended period of time. Forgiveness reduces stress and its damaging effects on your body.Forgiveness helps to support the immune system by diffusing the anger that compromises our ability to ward off illness.

Of course, if the forgiveness is given to someone you want to remain in a relationship with, it strengthens the relationship increasing feelings of trust and commitment. It can help to repair a damaged relationship.

The bottom line is that forgiveness is primarily good for the forgiver. It’s about letting go of the negative emotion caused by holding a grudge. Do it for you and for your good health.

My Story

Since June 2019, I decided to hold myself accountable for walking my talk. Several years ago, I was able to take off 135 pounds and essentially save my own life. I regained some of that weight in the last couple of years and I’m working my way back down. I’ve lost over 40 pounds since I began in June and have exercised nearly every day since August.

If you choose to join me on this journey, I hope I am able to impart some nutritional and lifestyle wisdom. Even though I may have gone off the rails temporarily I can still share some of my first hand experience as well as my acquired knowledge and training to help you make the right changes to live your best life.
