Who Do I Think I Am?

I haven’t really introduced myself in a while here so I thought I might take a minute to tell you who I am, what I do, why I do it  and why I think you could benefit from reading my work.

Who am I?

As you probably already figured out, my name is Karen Sammer. I retired from a long corporate career about four years ago, six months after my most recent health scare.

What do I do?

I am a Certified Nutrition and Health Coach. After a devastating cancer diagnosis in 2009, I decided to take control of my health to, at least, do whatever was within my control to prevent a recurrence.

Why do I do it?

Part one

Mine was an aggressive form of breast cancer that required a year of rather nasty treatment of chemo, radiation and surgery. One of the drugs in my chemo protocol has a pretty grim impact on cardiovascular health. More on that later.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was quite unhealthy. I was very overweight, eating badly and too much, sleeping badly, drinking too much and under a lot of stress. It’s really not surprising (at least to me) that I developed cancer. After learning the truth, it’s very fortunate that I discovered it early enough to make a meaningful recovery. And by meaningful, I mean I do not expect to ever see cancer rear its ugly head in my body again.

During my treatment, I researched ways to reduce the risk of recurrence and I found out that many of the cancers we see in modern society may be preventable by lifestyle and nutrition choices. I found out that cancer cells really love sugar and processed sugar really lights them up. So the first thing I did was eliminate processed sugar from my life. That, my friends, was an absolute game-changer. By making that one change in my diet, I was able to eliminate cravings, aches and pains and drop weight almost effortlessly. I lost 135 pounds and regained the energy I had as a kid. I also reduced my cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar numbers and they remain in the healthy range.

Part two

In 2017, I had another health scare. I had a heart attack brought on by a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). The SCAD was possibly influenced by the medication with the poor cardiac profile. I don’t know and may never know but it happened. This experience, and my subsequent training to be a WomenHeart Champion Community Educator, drove me to the work I do now. I help women who live with or are at risk for developing chronic conditions that we can manage through lifestyle and nutrition changes.

In the process of learning everything I did, I discovered my mission. That mission is to make this planet healthy one human being at a time, starting with the women.

Why do I think you can benefit from my experience?

I like to think that I took lemons and made margaritas, except I don’t drink…not for any pious reasons. I just believe my liver went through enough toxicity when it had to process all that poisonous chemotherapy. I owe it a break. but I digress.

I have been through a few challenges, there is no doubt. I don’t think my situation is nearly as bad as other people who have been through much worse. But, I found a way to turn things around and support my body, mind and spirit in ways that make me healthier than I was thirty years ago. And I can help you find your way back to vibrant health too.

By listening to my intuition and giving my body what it needs, I am able to maintain a higher level of health than many my age and younger. I can help you do the same.

My program

I have a five pillar program that begins with mindset. We also work on nutrition, lifestyle, emotional health and self-care.

I have clients who have been able to avoid a lifetime of medication by working with me. I have others who have been able to get their medical practitioners to reduce the daily medications they take.

Have you been told you may have to start taking a medication to manage a lifestyle related condition? Has your medical practitioner told you that your weight is making you unhealthy? Or maybe you just want to feel healthier, have more energy, sleep better and eliminate cravings. If so, let’s chat.

As a health coach, I work with women who are facing serious health challenges like heart disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes or who have been diagnosed as having a precursor to a serious health issue such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood sugar. I help them make food and lifestyle changes so they can get healthy, live longer and enjoy a fuller, happier, more energetic life.
