Happy Springtime!

Today at 11:33AM EDT, was the Vernal Equinox. It’s the day we have 12 hours of daylight. Now the days will continue to get longer until June 21st, when we experience the longest day of the year.

What does Springtime mean to you?

For me, springtime is my favorite time of year. I love the crocuses that pop out of the ground seemingly spontaneously. The flowering trees with their fragrant blossoms and vibrant colors raise my spirits like nothing else can. But first, I look for the tinge of yellow on the forsythias before they bloom that beautiful lemon yellow. I love that at 7:00PM, it’s still light outside.

Besides the visible signs of springtime in my yard and neighborhood, there is sort of an intangible aspect of the season I love. I feel a rebirth of sorts, a sense of new hope, new beginnings. I get energy from the new life that surrounds me and the sounds of nature that were silent during the cold gray of winter.

Winter is over so what do you do differently?

It occurs to me that I must be part bear because I feel like I’m in hibernation during the winter. Now I can emerge from my cave and walk among humans again. I want to regain the energy I lost hunkering down, not participating in much physical activity, during the winter.

Instead of eating my version of comfort foods, I start to crave fresh produce rather than cooked. I want to eat lighter and find creative ways to spend more time outdoors while still being productive day to day. I feel like I can take on new challenges and face interesting and scary stretches outside of my comfort zone.

I’ve been through my fair share of springtimes and it never ceases to amaze me. I am always excited for the change of seasons from cold to warm. It doesn’t go the other way though. Although I don’t mind the autumn, I really do not care for winter.

How will you celebrate the new beginning?

I feel like I am awarded a new lease on life every year at springtime and I want to pay that award the respect it deserves. I hope you do the same. Treat the changing season as a great jumping off point to the best of your life for the rest of your life.
