What is GLP-1 and Why Should I Care?

There has been an explosion in the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists in recent years with regard to weight management. I think it’s important to understand what you’re signing up for if you should decide this is the option for you.

Understanding GLP-1: The Basics

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a naturally occurring hormone in your body that regulates blood sugar, appetite, and digestion. It’s produced in your intestines when you eat, signaling your pancreas to release insulin, slowing stomach emptying, and telling your brain you’re full.

Why GLP-1 Medications Are Making Headlines

GLP-1 receptor agonists have revolutionized diabetes and weight management. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes (Ozempic, Trulicity), these medications gained popularity for significant weight loss benefits (Wegovy, Mounjaro). They mimic natural GLP-1 but last longer in your system.

Beyond Weight Loss: Multiple Health Benefits

GLP-1 medications offer more than weight management:

– Improved blood sugar control

– Reduced risk of cardiovascular events

– Potential protection against kidney disease

– Decreased inflammation

– Possible cognitive benefits being investigated

Who Should Consider GLP-1 Medications?

These medications may benefit people with:

– Type 2 diabetes struggling with blood sugar control

– Obesity with weight-related health complications

The Downsides: Side Effects and Considerations

Using GLP-1 medications is not without the potential for significant risk:

– Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

– Potential risk of pancreatitis and gallbladder issues

– Muscle wasting due to a lack of protein consumption

– High cost and potential insurance coverage limitations

– Not recommended during pregnancy or for certain medical conditions

– Not a permanent solution—effects reverse when medication stops

The Bigger Picture: Lifestyle Still Matters

GLP-1 medications work best alongside:

– Balanced nutrition focusing on whole foods

– Regular physical activity

– Stress management techniques

– Adequate sleep

– Adequate hydration

– Building sustainable habits
The Future of GLP-1 Treatments

Researchers are exploring:

– Oral formulations to replace injections

– Combined approaches with other medications

– Applications for additional health conditions

– Strategies to maintain benefits long-term

 Should You Care About GLP-1?

Whether you’re struggling with diabetes, weight management, or simply interested in metabolic health, understanding GLP-1 ,and its role in your health, matters. These medications represent a significant advancement in treating chronic metabolic conditions that affect millions worldwide but, in my opinion, they should not be used in your first attempt to achieve a healthy weight.

I never recommend medication as the first line of defense in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Using these medications can be financially unsustainable. Additionally, stopping them often leads to regain of the weight lost. Because of muscle wasting that often occurs with the use of these drugs, the regain could result in higher body fat percentage and potentially worse metabolic health than before starting the medication.

If you’re considering GLP-1 medications, perhaps consult with a health coach who can help you develop a sustainable plan to lose weight and stabilize your blood sugar so that cravings no longer control you. If your weight is the cause of a serious underlying medical condition, medication may be the right answer for you. With the medication, it will be important to closely evaluate your food choices and lifestyle habits and make the necessary changes to achieve optimal health.
